The water supply has been restored in 34 villages. In each village 10 people have been trained as water board to maintain the water supply and collect the contributions.
Regular points for attention within the project are:
- total respect for culture and traditions
- building a relationship of trust
- cooperation
- women must be enabled to participate actively in the project
- children must be able to go to school as much as possible
- education and training form the basis of the project
Masaai take over the project entirely
In the coming years the Masaai will take over the project from the WMD and Amref, both organisationally and financially. In 2003 an independent association was founded. To give the various tribes the opportunity to get used to each other, six cluster-association management teams have been set up. The management teams in a cluster have practically the same sub-culture and dialect.
Contribution
In 2004 the Masaai started to pay contribution for the association. At first, 12% of the total budget, rising in the coming years to 100%. With this money the Masaai should within a few years be able to run the association completely independently, including costs for cars, costs of technical support personnel, spare part stores, etc. Naturally, Amref will continue to keep en eye on things, even after 5 years, by having a seat in the coordinating association.
